Why you need a Digital Skill ID.
The CV is failing every worker — software engineers, chefs, electricians, hairstylists, drivers, everyone. Here's what replaces it, and why it matters whether your skills are typed into a terminal or used to wire a building.
The first CV was written in 1482 by Leonardo da Vinci. He sent a letter to the Duke of Milan listing things he could build — bridges, weapons, sculptures. The format hasn't fundamentally changed in 543 years. We still write a static document, send it to strangers, and hope they believe us.
That worked when hiring was local, small, and trust-based. It does not work anymore. Here is what the modern CV actually produces:
- 250 applicants per open job on average. A recruiter who spends 8 hours reading them is still going to miss the best one.
- 54% of CVs contain a material lie. Inflated titles, made-up dates, fake certifications. By the time you discover it, you've wasted three interview rounds.
- 20 days average time-to-hire. Each day is a candidate going to a faster competitor.
- Zero verification. Anyone can claim anything. The recruiter has no way to check.
And that's just for white-collar jobs. The situation is worse for everyone else.
The problem isn't just about tech jobs
Most career platforms — LinkedIn, Indeed, the ATS systems most companies use — were built for office workers. They assume you have a desk, a degree, and a keyboard. They are useless to the half of the workforce who don't.
A chef with 10 years at Michelin restaurants in three countries has no portable digital proof of her HACCP certification. An electrician with ID06, his solar PV qualification, and 15 years of safety audits has no way to scan-and-share that record with a new employer. A hairstylist who passed the national licensing exam and built a loyal clientele has no consumer-facing credential.
They're stuck with paper certificates, screenshots of their old payslips, and word-of-mouth referrals.
The platforms that serve software engineers don't serve plumbers. And the platforms that try to serve everyone — Indeed, JobNet — don't verify anything. The whole career-credentialing layer of the economy is broken.
What a Digital Skill ID actually is
A Digital Skill ID is a credential, not a document. Think of it more like a driver's license than a CV. It lives on your phone, has a unique code (JN-2026-XXXXX) and a QR code, and contains five things:
- Your identity, verified by your national digital ID system (BankID in Sweden, MitID in Denmark, FranceConnect in France — and the EU Digital Identity Wallet launching across all 27 EU countries by December 2026).
- Your skills, each one tied to a verifier — a course platform (Coursera, Credly, Udemy), an employer reference, or a national trade certification (ID06, frisörlicens, HACCP, EASA Part-66).
- Your work history, confirmed by your past employers via LinkedIn or direct employer verification.
- Your education, confirmed by the institution that issued the credential.
- A live match score against every open job — recalculated as your skills and the job market change.
A recruiter can scan the QR code with their phone and see your verified profile in two seconds. No PDFs. No formatting struggles. No "did you really work there?"
It works the same way for every industry. A chef's HACCP certification is verified by the same mechanism as a developer's AWS Solutions Architect. A welder's EN 287-1 certification works the same way as a designer's Adobe Pro certification. The infrastructure is shared. The content is industry-specific.
What just changed
"For the first time, the credentialing technology and the regulatory framework have converged. The EU mandated digital identity wallets for every citizen by December 2026. That's the moment the Digital Skill ID stops being a startup idea and becomes the default."
Why this is happening now
Three forces lined up in 2026:
Regulation: The EU's eIDAS 2.0 framework mandates that every member state offer a Digital Identity Wallet to its citizens by December 2026. The wallet stores government-verified credentials — IDs, diplomas, professional licenses. From 2027, regulated industries (banks, telecoms, healthcare, education, major platforms) must accept it. This is the most significant identity infrastructure shift since the introduction of national ID cards.
Technology: Verifiable Credentials (VCs) — cryptographically signed digital attestations — are now mature enough to deploy at scale. They're tamper-resistant, support selective disclosure (you choose what to share), and work across borders. The W3C standard is finalized.
User behavior: A generation that grew up paying with Apple Pay, signing leases with BankID, and verifying employment via LinkedIn doesn't believe in the PDF resume anymore. They expect everything to be one tap.
Justneed sits at the intersection of these three forces. We're the consumer-facing layer on top of the EU's verified-credentials infrastructure — the place where workers build, manage, and share their Digital Skill ID, and where recruiters scan it.
What this means for you
If you're a worker — any industry, any country — here's what changes:
- You upload your CV once. We extract everything into a structured Skill ID. After that, you never touch a CV again.
- Your credential grows as you grow. Finish a course on Coursera? It drops in automatically. Earn a new certification? Same. Get promoted? Your previous employer confirms it.
- You apply by swiping right. Top 10 matched jobs land in your app daily. Swipe right, AI writes a personalized cover letter, sends the application, recruiter sees a verified profile.
- Recruiters cannot doubt your credentials. Every claim has a source. The "is this real?" question disappears.
If you're a recruiter, the same shift means you stop reading 250 PDFs to find 5 worth interviewing. You see candidates pre-ranked by match score, every claim verified, every contact one-tap.
How to get one
If you're reading this on launch day: go to justneed.ai/get-started. Three steps, takes 60 seconds. Drag your CV onto the upload zone, pick your industry, claim your Digital Skill ID.
If you're a recruiter: justneed.ai/recruiters — free during the beta.
If you're outside Sweden: it still works. We're EU-launched but every country with a national digital ID system is supported on day one, and the EUDI Wallet rollout in December extends it to all 27 member states automatically.
